Best Image Format for Photography Portfolios

Photography portfolios have opposite demands from e-commerce: maximum quality and aesthetics matter more than load time, yet 10MB pages are unacceptable.

Master Format: TIFF or ProPhoto

Photographers keep masters in TIFF or ProPhoto RGB, lossless, full color depth. These are archives, not web files.

Web Delivery

For portfolios, serve AVIF (high quality) with WebP fallback (universal support). AVIF delivers 40–60% reduction from JPEG at identical perceived quality.

Resolution and Quality

Serve two or three resolutions: full-screen (2000px wide) for featured shots, thumbnail (400px) for galleries. Quality setting: 90–95% for hero images, 85% for thumbnails.

Color Space

Export to sRGB for web (safe, universal). Keep Adobe RGB masters for archive. Browsers cannot render wider color spaces anyway.

Metadata Preservation

Strip most EXIF (camera settings, location). Keep copyright and author. EXIF adds 30–50KB per image.

Gallery Performance

Use lazy loading on gallery pages. Load only visible thumbnails initially. Full images load on click or scroll.

Zoom and Lightbox

Lightbox galleries should link to full-res (2000px+) AVIF. Lazy load the full image only when lightbox opens.
