Best Image Sizes and Formats for Business Marketers in 2026

By Andre Cobham · September 6, 2026

Business marketers push images into more ad and social platforms than almost anyone else at a company: Facebook/Instagram ad creative, a LinkedIn company page banner, an X header, a Pinterest pin, a YouTube channel banner. Each platform publishes its own exact spec, and each rejects or badly crops an image that doesn't match it. Here is the real spec for each, sourced from each platform's own help documentation, and the format to convert to.

Facebook & Instagram Ads

Meta's own recommended minimum image pixel requirements put the safest all-purpose ad size at 1080×1080 (1:1) — it works across Feed, Marketplace, carousel, and search placements without unpredictable cropping. Vertical placements (Stories, Reels) use 1080×1920 (9:16). Meta accepts JPG or PNG, under 30MB.

Design tools frequently export ad creative as PNG even for photo-based ads, which needlessly triples file size. Convert photo-based ad creative to JPEG before upload; keep PNG only for graphics with transparency or overlaid text.

LinkedIn Company Pages

Per LinkedIn's own image specifications for Pages, the company cover image upload size is 4200×700px (LinkedIn displays it scaled down; the widely-repeated 1128×191 figure is the rendered size, not the upload target). Mobile crops to roughly the center 900px, so keep logos and text away from the edges. PNG or JPG, capped at 3MB.

If you're repurposing a wide print or presentation banner, convert it to PNG for logo/text sharpness, or to JPEG if it's photography-based and needs to clear the 3MB cap.

X (Twitter) Headers

X's Help Center specifies a 1500×500px (3:1) header photo, JPG or PNG. Mobile crops roughly 60px off the top and bottom, and the profile photo overlaps the lower-left corner — keep key content centered.

Pinterest Pins

Per Pinterest's own Pin spec guide, the standard Pin is 1000×1500px (2:3). PNG or JPEG, under 20MB. Pinterest crops anything taller than a 1:2.1 ratio in the feed, so a repurposed infographic or long-form graphic usually needs to be re-cropped, not just re-encoded.

YouTube Channel Banners

YouTube's own thumbnail and channel art help page recommends a 2560×1440px (16:9) banner, minimum 2048×1152px, with a 1546×423px safe zone guaranteed visible on every device including mobile. JPG, PNG, BMP, or non-animated GIF, under 6MB.

Email Marketing Images

Most inbox providers clip or block images over roughly 1MB and strip anything animated beyond simple GIF loops. Convert hero images to JPEG for photography and PNG only for logos or graphics with transparency, and keep total email image weight low — a slow-loading email is a deleted email.
