Image Optimisation for Shopify Stores: Format and Compression Guide
Shopify handles image resizing and CDN delivery automatically. Yet uploading unoptimized images wastes bandwidth. Learn how to prepare images for Shopify.
Shopify Image Handling
Shopify serves all images via its CDN. Shopify automatically generates responsive versions and serves WebP to supported browsers. You upload once; Shopify handles optimization.
Recommended Upload Size
Product images: 2000×2000 pixels. Feature images: 1200×628. Article images: 1200×640. Uploading at these sizes lets Shopify generate optimal responsive versions.
Format Recommendation
Upload JPEG (JPG) or PNG. Shopify converts to WebP for browsers that support it. You do not need to upload WebP; Shopify handles it.
File Size Best Practice
Pre-optimize before uploading. A 200KB JPEG compresses better in Shopify's CDN than a 500KB unoptimized JPEG.
Transparency and PNG
Use PNG only for product images with transparent backgrounds. PNG files are larger; Shopify still serves them efficiently via CDN.
Alt Text Matters
Shopify uses alt text for SEO and accessibility. Descriptive alt text ("red Nike running shoe size 10") improves search visibility.
Image CDN Settings
Shopify admin > Settings > Images. These control image optimization parameters. Default settings are usually optimal.
Lazy Loading
Shopify automatically lazy loads below-the-fold product images. No manual configuration needed.
Optimization Workflow
Before uploading to Shopify: compress to ~150–200KB JPEG, resize to 2000px, add descriptive alt text. Let Shopify's CDN handle the rest.
Bulk Optimization
Converting 100 product photos? Use QuickConvert's batch converter to compress and resize in bulk, then upload to Shopify.
